Scheduling across timezones without getting it wrong

Three things account for nearly every mistimed international meeting:

• Assuming the gap is constant. London and New York are five hours apart for most of the year, but four for about three weeks in March and one in October, because the two regions change clocks on different dates.
• Forgetting the southern hemisphere is inverted. Sydney gains an hour when Europe loses one, so the London–Sydney gap swings between eight and eleven hours.
• Ignoring the date. Any meeting after mid-afternoon in Europe is already the next day in Australia and New Zealand. "Thursday at 5" is not a complete sentence across that many zones.

India, Iran, and parts of Australia sit on half-hour offsets, and Nepal on a forty-five minute one — which is why this tool shows minutes rather than assuming whole hours.

Common questions

Does this handle daylight saving?

Yes, and it handles it for the date you pick rather than for today. Offsets come from your browser's own timezone database, so a meeting scheduled across a transition shows the offset that will actually apply on that date. This is the single most common scheduling mistake — the gap between London and New York is five hours for most of the year but four for a few weeks each spring and autumn, because the two do not switch on the same day.

What do the colours mean?

Green is 09:00 to 17:00, an ordinary working hour. Amber is 07:00 to 09:00 or 17:00 to 21:00 — possible, but you are asking for a favour. Grey is outside those, meaning someone would be sleeping. The label on each row states the same thing in words, so the meaning does not depend on seeing the colours.

Why does a row say +1 or −1?

The calendar date in that zone differs from the reference zone at that moment. A 09:00 Thursday call in London is 18:00 Thursday in Tokyo but 04:00 Thursday in Los Angeles; move it to 17:00 and Tokyo is already on Friday. Without that marker a grid of times is genuinely ambiguous.

Which cities can I add?

Any city your browser knows, which is the full IANA timezone database — several hundred zones covering every inhabited region. Type a city name such as Berlin, Tokyo, or New York and press Enter; you can also type a full zone name like Europe/London if you prefer.

Is anything saved?
